Center Overview

Improving People’s Lives through Research -The Northwest Clinical Research Center (NWCRC) is an independent research site dedicated to providing the highest quality of medical assessments and treatments. We are proud to have provided medical, psychiatric, and psychological services to the community through our partnership with the pharmaceutical industry since 1995. Research sponsored by NWCRC has been published in the best of medical journals and presented at national and international scientific meetings. Our research has contributed to the development and assessment of efficacy and safety for over 30 new medications. We take exceptional pride in the care of our patients as well as integrity in the data provided to our sponsors. In 2006 and 2007 we had two volume and data integrity audits by the Food and Drug Administration with no findings (no Form 483’s issued).

Facility Description

NWCRC is located in the heart of Bellevue, Washington. At our center we offer outpatient facilities and our inpatient facility partner is located nearby in Kirkland, Washington. We are easily accessible to Seattle and entire Greater Puget Sound area (over 3.5 million people). In addition, we have a transportation service (four drivers and vehicles) available full time to transport our patients between their homes and our center. Conveniently, we are located near the freeway, have a public bus stop in front of our building, and plenty of free parking. Our site has a welcoming and comfortable waiting room, 20 private patient interview rooms, 8 procedural rooms (for ECGs, physicals, pap smears, etc.), a secure on-site pharmacy, laboratory with phlebotomy draw/processing capabilities including centrifuges, refrigerator and -20 degree Freezer, conference room with computer and television for presentations, and a large and quiet room for monitoring visits.

Investigator Experience

Arif Khan, MD, Medical Director and Principal Investigator at NWCRC, is a Board Certified Psychiatrist and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Khan has been conducting clinical trials in the greater Seattle area since 1984 and founded NWCRC in 1995. At NWCRC, Dr. Khan has been the Principal Investigator in over 250 clinical trials. In addition, Dr. Khan has published more than 150 scientific papers in leading medical journals. His work on design of clinical trials and safety and efficacy in clinical trials, is widely recognized and presented at national and international scientific meetings.

Staff Expertise

Our center is unique in that our patients are screened at our office by a physician or psychologist. Currently we have two primary care physicians and six masters’ level study coordinators. We have additional coordinator, pharmacy, regulatory, laboratory, quality assurance, recruitment, and transportation support. All staff members are required to complete Good Clinical Practice Training provided by the National Institute of Health and HIPPA training in addition to study specific training.

Patient Demographics

We draw our patient population from the greater Seattle area (over 3.5 million people). Due in part to our Outreach Program and Transportation Service, we have access to a unique patient population including multiple ethnicities/races. Our patient population is even in gender and we have capabilities to recruit all ages (pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric).

Other Information

NWCRC uses a Central IRB for each of its studies. We have a regulatory coordinator knowledgeable with IRB requirements, FDA requirements, and documents required by each pharmaceutical company. NWCRC has an internal Quality Assurance Program that prepares study specific documents and carefully monitors our work. We have experience with remote data entry as well. Additionally, we have an extensive advertising and outreach team. We carefully plan an advertising strategy for each study including creative ad placement, and monitoring and follow up for all leads. Our outreach program has identified several contacts in the community for referrals.
